Course Overviews

group_smallThe courses we run are designed to prepare you to sit the NZSIA / SBINZ qualifications. There are two exams that you will sit during the season. The first is the, NZSIA / SBINZ Level One qualification. If you are successful at this level you will be able to then go on to and sit your NZSIA/SBINZ Level Two Ski or Snowboard Instructors exam.

The training in our courses will cover freeskiing/riding, Demonstrating, Teaching and Analysis.

NZSIA / SBINZ Level One

Level one is a four day exam for skiers and five days for snowboarders during which you will be trained and assessed. The elements are:

Teaching: This includes presentation skills and use of the teaching model as well as some technical information and progressions for beginners. A big part of this exam is how to teach children, therefore all of these areas are covered for adults and children.

Written test: This is an open book test to check your technical knowledge of the manual and analysis abilities.

Demonstrations: In this area you will be asked to demonstrate manoeuvres and turns relative to the levels you will be teaching.

Free Skiing/Riding: You will be assessed on your ability to free ski/ride around the mountain. You are expected to be a least a level 4 skier or snowboarder which is a parallel turn in skiing, or a strong edged turn in snowboarding.

NZSIA / SBINZ Level Two

The Level Two exam is broken down into the different elements of the job. Teaching; Skier/Snowboarder Analysis; Demonstrating; Free Skiing/Riding.

Teaching: You will be expected to present a lesson to your peers consisting of a small part of the teaching progression. In this lesson you will be assessed on your presentation skills and use of the teaching model as well as technical content and progressions used – The bottom line being, would the lesson work for real students?

Skier/Snowboarder Analysis: This part of the exam is to look at your ability to identify areas of improvement in real skiers/riders shown to you on video. You will be expected to identify the faults and then explain how you would firstly fix the students faults, then develop their skiing/riding onward.

Demonstrating: In this area you will be asked to demonstrate different types of turns that would be appropriate for your students of different levels. This comprises of Skiers – basic wedge turns through to short turns. Snowboarders – basic skidded turns through to basic freestyle. These demonstrations will be expected to be of a standard that would allow your students to learn through watching you ski/ride.

Free Skiing/Riding: You will be assessed on your ability to free ski/ride in different situations. Dynamic skiing/riding on groomed snow and off piste.
