In the alpine regions of NZ there is a little saying... "snow in May.. never stays, snow in June.. still too soon, but snow in July... on that you can rely". However 2009 seems to be challenging this local wisdom!! Snow has been falling constantly over the last week and the upper mountain snow base at Cardrona is now about 65cm. According to Hamish McKay, one of our snowmakers,
the trip up to Cardrona this morning was a mission with at least 20cm on the road and heavy drifting in places. Our Operations Crew have been out in the groomers out packing down the snow so it has a better chance of sticking around. We could be in for a cracking start to the season that's for sure... just check out this picture taken at the Base Area last week!
