Summer Report Feb 16, 2018 - Kiwis shine in Korea!

This week's summer report has all the excitement from Korea, an update on the NZ MTB Nationals, & more!

WHAT a week this has been! In some sort of solidarity with our athletes competing over in Korea, Cyclone Gita decided to deliver us a blanket of snow on Tuesday that is still melting at the time of writing on Friday. We're not sure we believe in signs, but this sure seemed like one – on Thursday New Zealand broke a 26-year winter medal drought with not one, but TWO bronze medal performances from Cardrona Team athletes Zoi Sadowski-Synnott & Nico Porteous!

We're so proud of the Kiwis this Games! Beau-James Wells landed an incredible run in the ski halfpipe final to finish in fourth, narrowly off the podium but a mammoth effort considering he'd just seen brother Byron break his kneecap in practice. Finn Bilous' clean ski slopestyle run (only 0.6 of a point off qualifying for finals) is one we'll remember for a while! Carlos Garcia-Knight is looking to back up his fifth place in snowboard slopestyle with a strong performance in the snowboard big air finals. He qualified in first place so it'll be exciting to see him in action at 2pm NZT tomorrow (Saturday Feb 24).

We've had a LOT to jump for joy about this week!

Weather Forecast

This weekend looks like it's off to a good start with a mostly-clear Saturday, with a few drizzles settling in for Saturday night & much of Sunday. According to the crew at Snow-Forecast.com, the start of next week is looking mostly clear!

Events

Unfortunately after the snowfall earlier this week, we had to make the call to focus on clearing the Downhill course for the Altherm Window Systems NZ Mountain Bike Nationals, so the Cross Country has been moved out to Lake Hawea. Downhill on Sunday will be an epic battle, so make sure you come up to check it out.

Racers Edge Fast Fridays social race series will be back next Friday evening with Round 3! Compete solo or grab a team together, there's still time to join in & get amongst the fun...

Our Dusty Divas & Crusty Demons welcome days are just around the corner! Dusty Divas is for all the ladies who want to get more confident on the Cardrona trails, & Crusty Demons is for masters-age mountain bikers who want to get familiar with our mountain. We want to show you around the mountain & give you some tips if you want them, all in a fun group environment!

With just 5 weeks left of summer up at Cardrona, there's not much time left to come on up & make the most of all the fun that there is to be had up here! Closing Day is April 1... we'll see you out on the mountain soon!
