The annual Cardrona Kids’ Cup went off with a bang yesterday! 50 kids aged 5-11yrs from all over New Zealand competed in an all-abilities slopestyle competition in Lil’ Bucks Terrain Park.
The mini skiers & snowboarders had 2 competition runs to impress the 3 judges with their best tricks over jumps, rails & boxes. After an hour-long practice, the kids all had their runs locked in & put down a real spectacle for all the parents & other guests.
“It was a great course for that age group, & the kids were frothing,” says Cardrona Sport Manager Graham Dunbar. “It was so great to see skiers & snowboarders in their first competition in the mix with experienced young competitors, all having fun.”
Some highlights of the day for the judges were 10yo snowboarder Rocco Jamieson’s winning run with a HUGE backflip over the jump, & tiny 8yo skier from Auckland Liam Richards charging hard in a clean 3rd place run in his division.
The top 3 place winners in each category received a prize pack from sponsors Dragon, Rossignol & Calci Yum. The youngest competitor in the field, 6yo Tye Baikie, won a Rossignol t-shirt & the best crash of the day, 6yo Holly Dunn, went home with a pair of goggles from Dragon.
11 year-old skier Zaryd Shaw took away the day’s ultimate spot prize, winning a GoPro Hero 4 Black & accessories, worth over $1000, from GoPro!!
It was an amazing day with some super stoked kids & a LOT of Calci Yum!
