Local Family with Kids - Pro Tips

So you're a local family with a couple of kids?

Up at Cardrona we've got experiences to cater for everyone - here are our top 5 tips for local families based in Queenstown, Wanaka & the rest of the district so you can have the best time up on the mountain this winter!

1. Sort your ski passes early

You can pick up your season passes anytime from the Cardrona offices in Wanaka (20 Helwick St) or Queenstown (37 Camp St) before the season starts. Both offices are open throughout the winter - if you have any questions, just pop in & see the team.

2. Get the kids a Local Child Season Pass

If your kids are at a school in the Central Otago district, pop into your school's office & pick up a season pass form! You can bring it into one of our offices or email it through to – just make sure the form has been stamped by your school first. It's a highly discounted season pass for all the kids in the local area so make sure you grab one for your kids this winter.

3. Join a Local Kids' Programme

Our Local Kids' Programmes run for six Sundays in a row throughout the season, & they're one of the best ways to get your wee grommies more confident on their skis or boards! Hobbits & Hobblets are for all ability levels of kids aged 4yrs+ (ski) & 7yrs+ (snowboard). The Academy is for more advanced kids who want to get into Big Mountain & terrain park riding.

The Local Kids' Programmes are the perfect way to spend a Sunday with the family – we look after the kids, while you get to head out skiing or snowboarding!

4. Check out CAST, Parks Squad or the Freeride Squad

If your kids are at a high level of skiing or snowboarding, & want to start specialising in a specific discipline, CAST, Parks Squad or Freeride Squad might be a great option for them! All of those programmes offer a range of commitment levels for kids wanting to get into ski racing, slopestyle & halfpipe or big mountain. If you're not sure which programme is best for your young ripper, email the team at

5. Park at Valley View!

If your family are all confident skiers or snowboarders, & you're season pass holders (or you've pre-sorted your lift passes in town), then the best tip to make your season run smoothly is to park at Valley View! You can get your coffee at Little Meg & be on the lifts before everyone else, as well as cutting 10mins off the drive each day. If you'd rather drive up to the top, use the Drop Off Zone by the Ticket Office to drop off the family right at the front door before parking your car – especially when it's a bit busier in the school holidays!
