WHAT a season it’s been at Cardrona for Winter 2016! We’ve had an absolute stunner of a season, sharing our love of the mountains with more guests than ever! What better way to close it all out than with another wicked final day – Closing Day was absolutely rad!!
The 2016 Closing Day was all kinds of fun! It was a day jam-packed with events for the whole family – everyone strutted their stuff in fancy dress for Fashion in the Field, tried their best to clear the epic pond skim at the bottom of McDougall’s, & had a boogie in the Courtyard with the live music throughout the day!
The major event finale was the Fun Never Stops ski/snowboard & mountain bike race! The race started with an eating & puzzle challenge at the Base Area before heading up McDougall’s Quad. Competitors then skied or snowboarded across the pond skim, under a commando net and through a “snakes & ladders” course before transitioning to their bikes & riding all the way down to the Cardrona Valley. It was a challenging, epic race & sure enough – the fun just NEVER stopped!!
Closing Day was the perfect day to reflect on a fantastic Winter 2016 season – check out our highlights:
Opening Day was a huge highlight for us this winter! We had a HUGE dump of snow a month before we opened, & then a period of warm weather which none of the NZ ski fields were stoked about! Our snowmaking & terrain team absolutely smashed it to make enough snow that we had the entire mountain open top to bottom on Opening Day, for the first time ever!
We were also stoked to give the best Opening Day prize – first chair rights & a bunch of goodies – to the very deserving Kelly McKenzie & her son Luke. Their house burnt down the week before opening so it was so great to see them smiling again on the first day of Winter 2016!
Valley View & Little Meg
For this winter we built a new carpark at the bottom of Valley View Quad & installed the greatest little café – Little Meg! The 2 new additions have made Valley View the place to be this winter for all our existing pass holders, especially first thing in the morning!! Valley View also had its longest season on record – open on Opening Day & closing only a week & a half before Closing Day!
We’re still frothing about everything that’s gone down on our 85+ft Big Air jump this season! Starting off with Nico Porteous becoming the youngest skier, at 14 years old, to ever land a triple cork was absolutely INSANE! Then Jossi Wells brought some of the world’s best skiers & snowboarders to his home playground for the inaugural Jossi Wells Invitational big air event – we still can’t believe the level of riding that was thrown down! We can’t wait to make next year’s Jossi Wells Invitational even bigger & better!
If the Wells boys weren’t smashing it enough, Jackson Wells then became the first skier to ever land a quad cork on the very same jump! To say the least – the time, hard work & achievements of all the athletes progressing at Cardrona has been mind-blowing & we can’t wait to see what they all get up to in the Northern Hemisphere!
Spring Camp & Summer
Now that we’re saying goodbye to Winter 2016, we’re saying a big hello to Spring Camp & Summer!! For the next 2 weeks, athletes from across the world will join NZ’s best in a training camp for Big Air, Slopestyle, & Halfpipe.
After Spring Camp finishes up on October 24 we start preparing for the upcoming 2017 Summer with mountain biking, mountain carting, hiking & more! We also start work on NZ’s first Chondola in November – watch this space for updates on the McDougall’s Express Chondola!!
We want to give a BIG thank you to our Cardrona family for another wicked season. To all our staff, industry friends & of course our INCREDIBLE guests – you’ve all made Winter 2016 one to remember & we’ll see you next year!! Yeeeeeeowwwww!!
