Cardrona What's On: Events Season Kicks Off

This weekend we're holding our first event of the Winter 2020 season - Mountain Bikes on Snow!

This week up at Cardrona started very well, with blue skies and cold temps, and lots of people around the mountain having a great time. We also launched our local kids' programmes last weekend. With heaps of Hobbits and Hobblets cruising the mountain with their instructors, Sundays are fast becoming one of our favourite days of the week at Cardrona.

The weather has been pretty unpredictable for the rest of the week, often not following what the forecast tells us will happen, so keep an eye on the webcams and our daily Snow Report to keep up to date... sometimes the weather and conditions will surprise you!

We're super excited to kick off our event season this weekend - find out more about our on-mountain events and the Mountain Bikes on Snow below.

Please join our Cardrona Snow Reports Facebook group or follow our Twitter account so you can keep up to date on what the snow and weather conditions are like each day, what facilities are open, and what's happening with the on-mountain events.

weather

After a fantastic start to the week, things have warmed up a bit and some weather is coming in over the weekend (nobody say the "r" word!). The high over the country seems to be relatively short-lived, with some more snow in the forecast for the middle-end of next week. Keep your fingers crossed and check the Snow Report from 6.30am daily!

If you're in the backcountry this week, don't forget to record what you observe through the NZ Mountain Safety Council's Avalanche Advisory page.

terrain parks

The North Face Cardrona Parks crew are trucking along nicely. This week it's all about keeping the features in good shape with the warm weather, then ramping up again when (fingers crossed) the snow falls next week. They've got the Winter Games NZ Obsidian coming up, which should be an awesome showcase of Kiwi talent in our backyard.

Here's a quick vid from Burton Aus/NZ of local legend Zoi Sadowski-Synnott tearing up the Antlers jump line:

events

As we said at the top of this week's blog, Sunday is our first event for the 2020 winter season - the Cardrona Mountain Bikes on Snow is on! Head on up on Sunday to check out all the action as the racers bike down from the top of Whitestar down to the Base Area... and maybe take a tumble or two on the way.

August is our biggest month for on-mountain events, so head to our Events Calendar to check them all out. Our next one after the MTB on Snow is the Base NZ Mini Mountain over at Treble Cone.

treble cone

Treble Cone has had a challenging with, with a couple of closed days due to the warm weather and strong winds to preserve their snowpack. It's looking like they could get a significant amount of snow next week, so have a look at the forecast and book in some powder day leave with your boss... If you want to be in on when all the good days are, join the Treble Cone Facebook Snow Reports group.

This week TC are also giving away a great prize pack with The North Face and Janina Kuzma this week - you can enter online at their website here!
