Cardrona What's On: Junior Nationals Week

We're heading into the second week of the October School Holidays at Cardrona, and it's Junior Nationals week!

One thing we can really count on spring for is unpredictable weather, and we've had a week full of that. We've had a couple of the coldest days we've ever had on the mountain this week, as well as beautiful sunny spring days!

The second week of the October holidays is almost upon us, and it brings our biggest youth event of the year - the annual SSNZ Junior Nationals. You can read the schedule for it in the "Events" section of this blog... it's an awesome opportunity to check out the future of Kiwi skiing and snowboarding in action.

Don't forget - we're still running our social media competition where you can win GoPro HERO8 Black cameras by recreating retro photos as we celebrate Cardrona's 40th birthday. Find out how to enter here!

There are still some amazing turns to be had up here - check out New Zealand ski racer Jack Adams enjoying some of his own in early morning training this week:

Please join our Cardrona Snow Reports Facebook group or follow our Twitter account so you can keep up to date on what the snow and weather conditions are like each day, how our facilities are running, and what's happening with our on-mountain events.

weather

Snow-Forecast.com is calling a scrappy next few days, with some high winds and precip over the weekend and on Monday. Our pick for the next week is Thursday or Friday at this stage, but there should be a few good moments in the first half of the week too.

If you're in the backcountry this week, don't forget to record what you observe through the NZ Mountain Safety Council's Avalanche Advisory page.

terrain parks

The North Face Cardrona Parks crew has had a busy week! They've rebuilt Jump 3 in Big Bucks, and all the jumps have got more snow on them than ever before so they're skiing and riding really well. They also put in new rail features in all the parks to keep everyone stoked through the end of the season. The international minipipe is a matter of days away now!

events

Here's the schedule for this year's Junior Nationals:

  • Monday October 5: Smith Skier-cross & K2 Snowboard Freeride
  • Tuesday October 6: Smith Boarder-cross & K2 Ski Freeride
  • Wednesday October 7: Salomon Ski & Snowboard Halfpipe
  • Thursday October 8: Salomon Ski & Snowboard Slopestyle
  • Friday October 9: Weather postponement day

We've postponed the 3rd annual Ngā Wāhine ō te Maunga (Women of the Mountain) fundraising event for B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer) due to weather. It'll now take place next Sunday, October 11. With just a $30 entry, 2 hour group lesson, an afternoon riding with lady pros, awesome prizes thanks to Rojo and more, and an aprés session with Maude Wines, it's set to be an incredible day for the ladies. Sign up online now!

Closing Weekend is just around the corner (October 17/18), and we've got a huge line-up for that too! On Saturday we're hosting our 40th birthday party, and you can get tickets online here. Chasing that up with the Fun Never Stops on Sunday, we're really seeing off Winter 2020 with a bang!

treble cone

Treble Cone is now closed for the season, and we want to give you all a massive shout out for your support as we took on a new challenge this winter. The team over there are so passionate about what they do, and it was wonderful to see you all excited about what they're doing at TC.

Public access to Treble Cone will be closed until after the team has completed necessary control work to allow the crew to safely move around the mountain for pack down. The team is using explosives and machinery so there is too high of a risk to allow public access at this time. It may not be until early next week that they're able to open up the gate.

There is plenty of snow up here so there will be lots of opportunities to enjoy it for those of you who are touring from next week onwards. You will need to fill out an online form before you are able to access TC, and they will post the link on the TC Snow Reports group when the road is back open.
