first steps into soho - willow's chair opens

Willow's Quad chairlift opened up 65ha of intermediate and advanced terrain - our first lift on the "back side" of Mt Cardrona. The lift was the upcycled old McDougall's Quad which was replaced by New Zealand's first chondola in 2017.

FAQs

Will Soho be open for Winter 24?

The plan is for Soho Basin to be open for Winter ’25. We’ll be building and installing the lift over two summers, this year, and Summer '24/25. Other elements of the ski area, like snowmaking facilities, will also be installed by opening day.

Will this change the way you sell lift passes?

We review how we sell lift passes every season to adapt to our guests’ needs. At the moment, we don’t foresee any significant changes to the way we sell passes.

What facilities will be in Soho?

The project is broken into two stages; Stage 1 is building and installing the lift and snowmaking facilities. Stage 2 will involve upgrading our food and beverage outlets throughout the resort to keep your experience at its best.

Does this mean Cardrona will have more capacity?

It sure does! To account for more people enjoying the slopes, Stage 2 of the project will be catering to ensuring our experience remains incredible. This means upgrades to rentals, food and beverage, and our carparks.

Will there still be touring access to Soho Basin in Winter ’24?

Access will be confirmed closer to next winter. As it will be a construction area, health and safety will be assessed before making any decisions.

What about the native wildlife and environment?

As kaitiaki of the maunga, it’s our duty to take care of its native residents. Soho Basin has biodiverse flora and fauna that will be prioritised and cared for when building and installing the lift.

How do you get to Soho Basin?

Take McDougall’s Chondola and follow the signage, or drop in from behind the top of Captain’s Express. You can also check out the terrain map.

What kind of skiing and riding will it be at Soho Basin?

Soho Basin will be awesome for intermediate to advanced skiers and riders. If you’re familiar with our terrain already, it will be a lot like Captain’s; fun and playful with both groomed runs and off-piste areas.

What’s the vertical descent of Soho?

You’ll be enjoying 380 vertical metres of descent!

What kind of snow does Soho Basin get?

Soho has a south-westerly aspect so throughout winter, the basin gets great snow accumulation. The snow also tends to stick around in the basin for a longer time, making it a great spring skiing destination too!
